Wealth Building: Money Can’t Buy Me Love! (Or Can it?)

Fair play to Paul McCarthy for that great song but don’t you just love the irony of the music industry!
Generation after generation, musicians come out with great songs gunning down capitalism, money and big business, when in fact, they are huge benefactors of probably the most capitalist, dog-eat-dog industry on the planet!

This theme carries through religion too, here’s a few to start off with:
• Money is a root of all of evil (Timothy 6:9-10)
• Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. (Matthew 19:21)
• “I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom    of God.” (Matthew 19:23-24)
• Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Mathew 5:3)
(Note: All of these are regularly misinterpreted to mean that wealth is bad, if you study the entire parables, scriptures referred to here, you can see that prosperity is blessed, provided wealth is the means and not the ends.)

When we refer to wealth in common everyday language, we find unappealing phrases such as “stinking rich” and “Filthy rich” as well as the everyday common attitude of “Money isn’t everything” and that old favourite: “There’s more to life than money”. Of course there’s more to life than money… So what?

The challenge with all of these factors, is that millions of people around the world, are disempowered as a result. Rather than utilise their full potential, grow and prosper, they struggle, worry and work all their lives. What a shame…and so unnecessary.

So why all this negative PR around money and wealth building?

Could it be a cleaver ploy by monarchs, religious organisations and power-holders to gather more wealth for themselves? Could it be used to maintain control over the masses? Keep them ignorant so they may continue to serve and maintain a status quo? Conspiracies abound, but one thing is certain, a lack of understanding of wealth creation and wise money management results in people being controlled by money and those in possession of it.

SO! For the craic, Yes! Money CAN buy you love!

With the right attitude towards money and wealth creation, a world of opportunity opens up. As a means of exchange, nothing has yet been developed to match it; money is more liquid and of more common perceived value than any other form of trading unit around the developed world. Now consider what good you could do with a plentiful supply of money. If you have a negative charge against money, this is an exercise well worth your while. On a blank page write: “The Good I can do with a plentiful supply of money” and then devote at least 30 minutes to writing as many ideas as you can think of to support this heading. When you have finished, actually you have just started, now really use your imagination and come up with more and varied ways you may benefit the greater good with your supply.

What service can you be to your family? Your community? Your Country?

Could you provide seed capital to enable people to begin their ventures?
Provide better care for elderly, homeless and those in struggle? The list is huge…

Here is a great example, in 1983, Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi economist, founded Grameen Bank, an institution that provides microcredit (small loans to poor people possessing no collateral) to help its clients establish creditworthiness and financial self-sufficiency. In 2006, Yunus was awarded the Nobel Prize for his efforts based on the idea that the poor have skills that are under-utilized. He developed a group-based credit approach which utilises peer-pressure within the group to ensure the borrowers follow through and use caution in conducting their financial affairs, ensuring repayment eventually and allowing the borrowers to develop good credit standing. Interestingly, the overwhelming majority (98%) of its borrowers are women. You can find all the details on Wikipedia but it illustrates the concept that people can become empowered through their own ingenuity and by providing them with understandable financial education.

But what has this to do with buying love?

Well, the key to happiness is to have something to look forward to, a means to achieve it and someone to share it with. Your efforts to generate wealth and contribute to the greater good, will result in your own improved self esteem, worth and confidence which in turn gives you charisma and magnetism to draw people towards you and POW! Love blossoms!
