“A Balanced Life is a Better Life”

Take 5 Minutes to Really Look at How You’re Doing!

You know when you are leading a busy life, sometimes it takes a dramatic event to point out what you have been neglecting and, “all of a sudden” you are caught in a relationship breakdown, illness, financial difficulty or some other calamity.

Take just five minutes, do this exercise and take an honest view of where you’re at… Perhaps a small change in your routine now could prevent a big issue down the track.

Can You Handle The Truth?!  When you have finished, ask your partner or someone who knows you well to complete this exercise on your behalf… (this might sting a little!)

This “Wheel of Life” is commonly used by professional life/business coaches; it considers each area of your life in turn and when completed assesses what’s off balance and what areas deserve more attention.

The Wheel of Life is powerful because it gives you a vivid visual representation of the way your life is currently, compared with the way you’d ideally like it to be. It is called the “Wheel of Life” because each area of your life is mapped on a circle, like the spoke of a wheel.

PS: The aim here is not to achieve “Perfect Balance” but just to point out any area that should get some more focus, perhaps by easing off on an area showing a very strong focus at the moment.

  • Step #1: Download & Print Your Own Wheel of Life Worksheet here (or just draw it out quickly)
  • Step #2: Consider each area in turn, and on a scale of 0 (low) to 10 (high), mark down how satisfied you are with it. Mark each score on the appropriate spoke of your Life Wheel
  • Step #3: Join up the marks around the circle. Where does it lose shape the most?  What could you do to get that more into shape?
  • Step #4: (Optional) You can use the result as your basis for your goal setting ahead

The Wheel of Life is a great tool to help you improve your life balance. It helps you quickly and graphically identify the areas in your life to which you want to devote more energy, and helps you understand where you might want to cut back.

The challenge now is to transform this knowledge and desire for a more balanced life into a positive program of action.
